Tara didn’t realize how much she needed her garden until she was forced inside one rainy afternoon. She was drawn to her late husband’s photograph – the black and white one that rested above his urn on the mantle.
“Why did you have to leave us, Mitchell? Why was it your time to go?” Tara asked through tears as she rested the photo on her belly. Her baby girl, who would arrive in two months, would only know her father through stories, pictures, and videos.
When sunshine greeted Tara the following morning, she slipped on her boots and walked to the garden before having her coffee. She knelt, weeding it as best she could. Her gloves became wet and covered in soil. The smell of the earth filled her insides, her being.
Tara plucked a handful of tomatoes from their vines, set them in a small basket, and remained on her knees in the damp grass. Ants crawled around her. She noticed various bugs making new homes in this little ecosystem she had born into the world.
Tara took in her new universe as she held her belly, gloves still on. She took a deep breath. A second – a third.
Somehow, someway, she knew she would make it through.
