Three texts. Nine words. "The baby died. I’ve miscarried. There was no heartbeat." Your big sister tries bringing you back by kissing Mommy’s tummy, but sadly that’s not how it works, not in this life. Later, I’m in the shower, thinking of these messages, thinking of you, Finley. Our future family photo comes into focus. I break down. “Come back, come back …” blasts off the walls as water swirls down the drain. Eddie Vedder’s wails drown my own. Give me a second chance, Fin. I’d love to meet you in a happier place, at a better time: in another life.

I was lucky enough to have my story selected as a finalist for the Spring 2022 contest. All contestants were asked to write a 100-word memoir that tied into the theme of second chances.
Special thanks to Susanna Baird, editor at Five Minutes, and the rest of the reading team. They are an incredibly kind and supportive group.
If you are ever interested in writing a 100-word micro memoir of your own, try submitting one to Five Minutes. Their submission guidelines can be found here.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
In Another Life is super.
An entire story in 100 words. Hard to do. You aced it, Justin, with this poignant family account. Congratulations. Sharron at LEAVES.
