Lydia buys her first wig at twenty-six. No style or color is off-limits.
“Lyd” starts sporting various lids, too. Friends and family buy her beanies, baseball caps, fedoras – even a Viking helmet.
“What the hell am I supposed to do with this?” she asks, thumbing the horns.
“Wear it, you dork,” her older sister Penny replies. “Cover up that beautiful bald head.”
Some days Lydia chooses to leave all her wigs and hats at home. The stares annoy her at first – the sympathetic looks, too – but she gets used to them after a while.
On a cold morning in November, Lydia receives news that changes her life – brightens her world.
And on her twenty-eighth birthday, not two weeks later, she and Penny load up her Beetle with her wig and hat collection. Smiling, Lydia puts the car in drive, en route to the local cancer center.
Thanks so much for reading “Lids and Wigs” — I hope you enjoyed it.
Fifties by the Fire
Next Friday, November 25, we’ll have our bi-weekly “fire” where we gather to read and write some fifty-word stories. I thought about holding off due to Thanksgiving being the day prior, but then I thought…what better way to break out of a food coma? Next week’s challenge will be to tell a fifty-word story based on John Lightle’s photograph, seen below.
I’ll shoot for our usual 7:00 AM EST start time. Same guidelines as always!
Take care and have a great weekend!
As a recently bald cancer patient, I sometimes enjoyed going scarf-less and observing the reactions of others.
Humans... We are a fascinating lot!
Good one, Justin. 😀
