Fifties by the Fire
Fifties by the Fire — a fifty-word, prompt-based writing exercise. Feel free to share your response below, or read and comment to join the fun.
Prompt: Use the photo as inspiration to write a fifty-word story (fiction, CNF, or poetry).
Here are the other guidelines:
Make sure your story is exactly fifty words. Feel free to use Word Counter or your preferred word processor.
Write a title with the genre in the first line.
The title does not factor into the word count.
Good luck and have fun. Happy writing!
Below is my contribution.
(Also, check out this little tune by Radiohead. “Treefingers” might pair nicely with the photo!)
We, the Trees (poetry)
We see
How we long for the heavens and reach for the stars
Yet here we are, anchored to Earth
Stationary vessels
We hear secrets on the wind,
Taste blood and smoke in the air—
Share love stories with the land.
Our roots grow long and deep.
We, the trees.

Dino got one last request. For old times’ sake.
“Give it to me in the front.”
“Of course. You want to take it like a man.”
“Nah, it’s just physics.”
“Huh?”
“I want to fall backwards. One last look skyward. I figure where I’m headed there won’t be a sunroof.”
