The following is in response to September 29th’s Wake Up and Write prompt, found here. More importantly, this “micro tale” will come out in waves. In essence, it will be serialized, but on a much smaller scale — up to 250 words at a time. Please feel free to leave me a comment or some feedback regarding this experimental idea or the story in general. Thanks so much for reading!
The boy snuck out his bedroom window to investigate the mysterious pulsating light coming from the forest. He wasn’t alone: the moon guided him. So did the river. They were his closest companions to date. He followed the riverbank, careful of his footing. Deeper and deeper into the woods he explored. The light got brighter and brighter, a strange pinkish hue.
Eventually, he crossed the old rickety bridge and onto the opposite bank. He ducked through a dense thicket – hands out in front of his face to shield his eyes. When he broke free from the tangle of branches and thorns, he saw it: a massive stone archway, a strange magical light rippling from it in the dark.
It was a portal.
He wanted to turn away but couldn’t. Then, as if pulled by some invisible force – some great, godlike hand – he was dragged feet-first through the wet leaves, directly into it.
