On one hand, I admire the boy but on the other, I hope he finds some balance in his life. The line about his old baseball team winning the championship was poignant. Real food for thought here, Justin.
Thank you so much for reading, Jim. I kept wondering what others would think about this one. My perspective aligns with yours without question. I appreciate you!
Thank you Justin for this poignant story. This boy has decided early on what he values and who he wants to be. Whether it will serve him well in the future is anybody's guess, but I have to admire his determination. Mama, say good bye -- He has found a larger world already. He would have, eventually, any way.
And thank you, Sharron, for reading! He has certainly found the wider (and working) world, hasn’t he? I admire his determination, too, but I feel saddened that the childhood he knew is over.
That is not an uncommon story. My mother had a neighbor boy about twelve years old who mowed her yard and cleared the snow off her sidewalks with equipment he had salvaged. He is a successful mechanic today. A friend of mine started a lawn mowing business in junior high and had a full schedule of lawns to mow each summer. As for the mother in this story, my grandson graduates high school in May and goes away to college in the fall. My sister is freaking out! She thinks she may never see him again.
You’re right about that, K.C. Love to hear stories like the ones you mentioned! I think there are far too few kids pursuing those types of jobs today. I try to encourage kids to pick up a trade along their way through school.
And aww. That will be difficult to work through. But, as we all know, she will!
As a Mom, I think I get this Mom’s fears….but, I know these tears of apprehension, will turn to tears of joy and pride. That’s the gift of grown children, if we are fortunate…I know I was! Touching and insightful story, Justin!

I love your perspective, Sharon. I hope this mother and son are just as lucky! 😊
