Awww!! I remember when Rylo was just five years old and our cat Leon the same... Leon will be ten in June. As crazy as he is, he has been a comfort through any unhappy times, and entertainment always. Great story, Justin.
I can’t believe so much time has gone by! I remember your Leon stories well, haha. The bond we share with our pets is strong. Rylo has been so steadfast and so loving - even after all these years! I couldn’t ask for a better dog.
Thanks for reading, Andrea! I’m happy you enjoyed it. 🙂
Great story, Justin. My old hound dog Duke passed away in March of 2020 just a few weeks before his 12th birthday. He had lived much longer than the average for bloodhounds, so I am thankful to have had so many years with him; but still I was heartbroken. Funny how God knows exactly what we need. A month after Duke passed, a little black dog came running out of the woods towards our house. She's been with us ever since, and it's uncanny how much her personality resembles old Duke's.
I like the story, but most hardcore drinkers don't have a buffet of name brand booze to pour out. Even if you're lucky enough to afford a call name brand, at a certain point you're down to buying one " comfort " booze.
Thanks so much, Jimmy. It’s great feedback. Initially I had written “the booze” to keep it a little more general but I replaced it with the names. What you said makes perfect sense. If I revise the piece I think I’ll either go back to the original idea or pick one of the names to roll with.
Great song, great reference to cheap hardcore alcoholic booze: The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill by Husker Du. I don't know if 5 O'Clock is regional or national, but that's another "this person is in a bad place" brand.
Thanks for sharing the song. I like it. I looked up 5 O’Clock and the label looks familiar, but I genuinely have no idea. I appreciate the feedback and ideas, Jimmy!

always!
We all need some companionship. And dogs are some of the best companions.
They really are. I can’t imagine life without them.

Aww, Duke. What a great name. Bloodhounds are such beautiful dogs. It sounds like you had many wonderful years with him, Andrea!
Wow, that’s pretty incredible timing. Sometimes an ending is simply another beginning! Thanks for taking the time to share your story (and Duke’s). 😊
