The winter weather reports had been rolling in on every news station in the region for days. Snow was coming – a lot of it.
Children, parents, and teachers went to bed that night anticipating the exciting news in the morning.
But when they woke, the brunt of the storm plainly missed them. It had been pushed off to the east. An inch or two of the fluffy stuff wasn’t enough to call it for the day.
“Sorry, Shelly,” Gene Hurst, head of the transportation department, said to the superintendent of schools over the phone. He had just driven down the main highway and back roads with no problem. “Not enough out here to warrant a snow day.”
“Ugh,” Shelly groaned over the phone as she dropped her head back down onto her pillow. “Damn it, Gene. I was looking forward to a mimosa.”

Snow days were rare when I grew up in Michigan. They just plowed the main roads and we walked up to the corner to catch the bus. In elementary school I walked to school no matter what the weather. But those special days when they cancelled school were the best!
Yup. It's not just the kids who look forward to a day off!
