I hope your reading and writing ventures are going well.
I often find that the more I read — in all varieties and mediums — the more inspired I am to write. I’m wondering if this is the case for you, too. So…what are you currently reading? Novels, short stories, nonfiction, other Substack newsletters — let’s hear it all!
Currently, I’m halfway through It by Stephen King. I’m also about to dive into Brandon Applegate’s Those We Left Behind: And Other Sacrifices. I’ve recently signed up for some other fiction newsletters on Substack and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying them. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet, here they are: LEAVES by Sharron Bassano, Future Thief by Brian Reindel, and A Story a Week by Robert Potter.
I hope your week is filled with a lot of reading and writing.
I mostly read non-fiction. Currently I’m reading The Secret History of Mac Gaming by Richard Moss, which throws a spotlight on indie devs of the 80s / 90s who made strange and wonderful Mac games.
That sounds like a great read. What were some of the titles of those games?
My family bought a used Mac around ‘94 or ‘95, I want to say. As a kid I remember the Oregon Trail...some schoolhouse math game...a couple others. Those were some of the first video games I ever played!
I forgot all about Carmen Sandiego. And yes! Myst was a huge hit in our house. We used to love trying to solve all the puzzles together. Those were beautiful games.
Thanks for sharing! Now I’m going to have to look up the ones I’m not familiar with. 😄
I'm currently reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" I'm looking for good standalone sci-fi so if you have recommendations let me know 👍 I recently read another one of the "Best Of Fantasy and Science Fiction" anthologies. I love short stories.
Very fun! I recently read Ray Bradbury’s “A Sound of Thunder” - one of my favorite short stories of his. A couple months ago I read Artemis by Andy Weir. I guess you could call it a sci-fi thriller? It wasn’t at all what I was expecting, but I loved every page. It’s pretty fast-paced and the characters are memorable.
I’m reading “Knuckleheads” by Dan Antion, one of the bloggers I follow, additionally, we are reading “Atlas of the Heart” by Brene Brown in my faith-based reading group a church. Both are really good in totally different ways. I am the same way about reading and writing. ☺️
I usually read several books at once. Right now I'm enjoying volume 2 of the graphic novel adaption of Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow, Season One of the The Beam by Sean Platt and Johnny Truant, and Ada Limon's latest poetry collection the Hurting Kind.

Oh yeah! Oregon Trail, Math Blasters, Carmen Sandiego, Reader Rabbit. I played a bunch of those great edutainment games on my Apple IIgs.
Some of the classic Mac games the book covers include Glider, Spectre, Marathon, Snood, and perhaps the biggest Mac developed game of all-time: Myst.

Cool, I'll check both of them out! 👍

Very neat! I think it’s always fun to read indy authors. One of my goals is to support indy authors more by purchasing more self-published books.
I just finished Adrian McKinty's thriller, The Island. And thrilling it was!
Ooh, just looked it up. It sounds thrilling! 😀
His novel, The Chain, is even more exciting, I think.

There’s a graphic novel adaptation of Sapiens?! How cool! I may have to check that out. Thanks for sharing, Jason!
Reading Dog Stars by Peter Heller, just finished the Murderbot Diaries (series)
What did you think of the Murderbot Diaries? I’ve heard of the series but haven’t given it a shot yet.
Lots of fun. Great worldbuilding.
That’s awesome! When I read nonfiction I tend to read it in bursts, too, for some reason. Thanks for sharing!
