Was it meant to be this way?
You, me, an open road – the sky?
What about the dreams we dreamt, the house we haggled for, the garden beds we had planned to restore?
The look in your eyes tells me everything I need to know.
We don’t know where we’re going – what we’re doing – but let’s see where this highway leads.
Home is wherever you are.
Have you ever had the urge to do something spontaneous and follow through with it? Maybe it wasn’t uprooting your entire life and going into the unknown like this couple. (Then again, perhaps it was.) I’m interested to hear about your experiences! Feel free to comment below.
Story Prompt: If you’re looking to get some words on the page, write a story about a character who makes a spontaneous decision. The decision can be life-altering or a more trivial one. See where the idea takes you!
PS — What are your thoughts if I included a fiction writing prompt at the conclusion of my stories? My thinking: two birds with one stone. I’ve been meaning to get back to sending out prompts in some capacity, but I haven’t been able to find the happy medium. This feels right. I’d love to hear your feedback!
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Prompts at the end are a good idea.
I was working for Northwest Airlines in Detroit. One day they posted an opening for Raleigh, North Carolina. Being tired of the Michigan winters, I decided to put in for it thinking I wouldn’t get it (it went by seniority.) I asked my wife what she thought. She said! “Go for it.” I didn’t get the transfer. Then a couple of weeks later, they fired a coupled of the guys who did get it. I ended up getting it on Thanksgiving Day and had ten days to move to Raleigh. My wife and kids had to stay in Michigan and try to sell the house. It finally sold in February. We have been in NC for 25 years. Northwest is gone, but I am still here.
I like the story and the idea to do prompts again, but would we answer them here in the comments?
The one example I can think of that was spontaneous was my decision to join the military when recruiters came to speak to my government class in high school. I decided as soon as I heard the opportunity that I was going to do it-even though I may have had other plans-my direction changed in that moment, I followed through and what came next was a battle, but I won and was allowed to enter the military.
Let me know about where we should answer the prompt, and keep ‘em coming!
