I was working for Northwest Airlines in Detroit. One day they posted an opening for Raleigh, North Carolina. Being tired of the Michigan winters, I decided to put in for it thinking I wouldn’t get it (it went by seniority.) I asked my wife what she thought. She said! “Go for it.” I didn’t get the transfer. Then a couple of weeks later, they fired a coupled of the guys who did get it. I ended up getting it on Thanksgiving Day and had ten days to move to Raleigh. My wife and kids had to stay in Michigan and try to sell the house. It finally sold in February. We have been in NC for 25 years. Northwest is gone, but I am still here.
Thank you, Mark. Oh wow, I didn’t know you live in NC. (Or was this a fictional piece? 😅) My wife and I almost uprooted from NY and moved to the Charlotte area about eight or nine years ago. We never made the move, but we sometimes wonder what our lives would be like now if we did.
I like the story and the idea to do prompts again, but would we answer them here in the comments?
The one example I can think of that was spontaneous was my decision to join the military when recruiters came to speak to my government class in high school. I decided as soon as I heard the opportunity that I was going to do it-even though I may have had other plans-my direction changed in that moment, I followed through and what came next was a battle, but I won and was allowed to enter the military.
Let me know about where we should answer the prompt, and keep ‘em coming!
Thanks, Kim. Happy to hear you’re on board with the prompts! Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. If you want to, you can respond in the comments. Or you can use the prompt for your own personal writing, etc.
Wow, what a life-changing decision that was! What branch did you serve in? Thank you for sharing that - and for your service.
I really like this one, Justin. My college roommate and I made the decision one afternoon to hop a bus to Washington, D.C. (about two hours from our campus). We had barely any money, no credit cards, but just a sense of adventure. We toured the city, had so much fun, and felt very rebellious. Still a fond memory!! I love the idea of your including a writing prompt at the end of your stories.
Thanks so much, Andrea! That D.C. trip sounds like it was a blast. I loved that feeling of not having a care in the world. You were a rebel then and a rebel now! 🤣
Prompts at the end are a good idea.

All true. We are near Raleigh. Love it here.
It’s a beautiful area! Thanks for sharing, Mark.

I’m very much a ready, fire, aim kind of person when it comes to my vocational choices. It always makes life interesting!
I like the prompt at the end of the stories
That’s really cool. I’m sure it keeps you on your toes in a good way! Thanks for letting me know about the prompts, too. 🙏
I like the prompt at the end of the story. Fewer, meatier emails are better in my opinion.
Thank you for the feedback, Jim!
